Seoul, Korea (June, 2014) – Day One: Hongdae

October 6, 2014

We decided to cap off the day by having our dinner in a good old Korean BBQ restaurant in Hongdae (which is also an abbreviation for Hongik University). Since it’s in the vicinity of the school, you’ll be sure to see much of the youth around the area. Apart from that, Hongdae has also become the ‘go-to’ place for young street performers who aspire to be discovered and become professional artists of their own specialty one day.

(P.S. Please forgive me for the photo quality, since I was only able to use my mobile phone to snap photos during the part of the trip!)

Walking along the streets of Hongdae.

Hongdae at night. There’s also a semi-long shopping street within walking distance.

Apart from street performers, Hongdae is also known for being an artsy-fartsy location with its public art installations found close to the plaza area. (Also, I have no photo of it, but there is a nearby park that is famous for being full of wonderful graffiti art.)

This is where we had dinner. I forgot the name of the restaurant, since there was also no English translation, but we found this through an app and discovered that it had really good reviews.

Some of the street performers we saw at the plaza.

The famous Hello Kitty Cafe of Hongdae! I find this branch more interesting since it sits on a hill and its exterior design has stronger character to it! My sisters and I really wanted to try it there, but we didn’t have much time.

We capped off a tiring day of (lots) of walking with some nice street dessert! This one is called a Long-ffle, which is basically a long waffle topped with ice cream (you can choose from different flavors), and sprinkled with flavored bits.

This is the long-ffle I ordered! I think it costs about 3000 KRW? (about 3 dollars) I got the dual-flavored ice cream topped with candy sprinkles! ♥

This marks the end of day one! Hongdae became a really exciting experience for us, since we spent day one as just us siblings, so it was very apt for us for being part of the youth. We all had our interests in some sort of art (painting, music, fashion, etc.), so we all had our fair share of an enjoyable experience in Hongdae! 🙂 After our quick, simple, yet delicious dessert, we headed back for our home sweet (second) home, BBUNGALOW Hotel.
